يرى العلامة أوريجينوس أن كلمة ترشيش تعنى بحرًا أو تأملاً في الفرح أوجمالاً، وقد أراد يونان النبي أن ينزل إليها، أي إلى بحر حكمته البشرية وجمالها والفرح بها عوض الطاعة للوصية الإلهية الصعبة الخاصة بخلاص أهل نينوى (راجع كتابنا عن سفر يونان).

شعب ترشيش جاء عن ياوان (تك 10: 4)، وُيعتقد أنها ترتيسوس الواقعة في جنوب أسبانيا قرب جبل طارق، ولعلها هي قرطاجنة المدينة الواقعة شمال غرب أفريقيا. كانت غنية جدًا بالمعادن كالفضة المطرقة، والمصنوعة ألواحًا (إر 10: 9) والحديد والقصدير والرصاص. إن كانت شبا وددان تمثلان التجارة في الشرق، فإن ترشيش تمثل التجارة في الغرب، لهذا جاء في حزقيال النبي: “شبا وددان وتجار ترشيش وكل أشبالها يقولون لك: هل لسلبِ سلبٍ أنتَ جاءٍ؟! هل لغنم غنيمةٍ جمعت جماعتك لحمل الفضة والذهب؟! لأخذ الماشية والقنية لنهب نهبٍ عظيمٍ؟!” (38: 13).
